And the Winner is…

Buffalo Barre

Congratulations to Buffalo Barre’s 30 Day Challenge winner, Maureen D’Angelo! 12.3 lbs. lost, 7.25 inches, 26 classes! Wow! Amazing! Be proud of yourself Maureen and keep up the great work! Cheers to your dedication, inspiring others and winning a free month of unlimited classes at Buffalo Barre! Congrats from all of us at Buffalo Barre!

The weight loss is remarkable but my favorite part of this challenge was watching friendships form and women come together to support one another. Just a fabulous group of women that I cannot say enough about! Congrats to ALL of the 30 Day Challengers! You rocked it and you are all winners!

Here is what Maureen had to say about the challenge: “Thanks to Maria McKendry, Lynette & Renee for making this 30 challenge so much fun:) You ladies are fantastic instructors and a great source of inspiration! I’m lucky to have met the other participants who are all so supportive of each other and helped motivate me…I love the variety of classes offered and the discussions about healthy nutrition. Only a few changes in my diet made a big difference in how I feel. I’m so happy with the results and I feel great:) Looking forward to continued success with all of you!”

Here is what another participant had to say: “The numbers don’t lie ladies. 3 days a week of working muscles to some good music with Maria McKendry + some minor shifts in eating habits helped by a few nutrition sessions = 8 1/2 lbs lost & over 4 inches off of my waist! The 30-day Challenge has been more transformational than I had expected.  I thought it would just kick start my work out but I’ve learned interesting alternative views on nutrition as well. I highly recommend the 30-Day Challenge at Buffalo Barre. Thank you Maria!”

Buffalo Barre’s “Go Red For Women” Event

Friday, February 7, was National Wear Red Day! Buffalo Barre celebrated National Wear Red Day® with a Go Red For Women event to help raise awareness about women’s No. 1 killer—heart disease. Keeping in tune with “Buffalo Barre Gives Back” we offered a free Power Yoga class.  Everyone received a “Go Red” pin with the signature red dress on it. Literature on women and heart disease including the signs and symptoms in women was distributed. Women came together to support one another, friends were made, some tried yoga for the first time, we listened to some really cool music and we all used that time to honor our hearts and bodies. Thank you Renee for an awesome class!!!

Buffalo Barre Kids!

Buffalo BarreAccording to Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative, a staggering 1 in 3 children in the US are obese or overweight. Although childhood obesity is decreasing in numbers in some cities, it continues to be a major crisis in our country. What is called “Adult Onset Diabetes” is now being diagnosed in children. Obesity is being diagnosed in children as young as age 2! Childhood obesity can lead to other problems later in life like heart disease, osteoarthritis, stroke, several types of cancer, sleep apnea and the list goes on. In addition to physical health problems, kids may suffer from a lack of self-esteem and other psychological issues.

Buffalo Barre Kids is a fun, healthy way for kids to spend an hour on a late Sunday morning whether they have weight issues or not. It takes them away from the video games, TV, iPads etc. and still leaves the early morning and rest of the day for family time.

Buffalo Barre

The things they will learn at Buffalo Barre Kids will be carried throughout their lives…mostly that exercise can really be a lot of fun!

Buffalo Barre

In class, we focus on the fun. Fun kids music, fun games, fun traditional excercises like jumping jacks, skipping, galloping and a combination of basic stretching, Barre, Pilates and Yoga exercises.

The Standing Leg

At Buffalo Barre, we use the term “the standing leg.” The standing leg is usually burning, shaking and doing its best to support the moving leg. The question I get all the time is…”why is my standing leg killing me if I’m working the other leg?”

It’s such a great question! You’re working so hard to do all the movements correctly with the leg that’s moving that you get frustrated when the standing leg wants to give out and give up!

When you’re weight bearing through one leg, you’re firing every muscle in that leg including your intrinsic foot muscles, your gastrocnemius, soleus, tibialis anterior, peroneals, hip adductors, abductors, hip flexors, quadriceps, hamstrings, your core which includes your glutes…I’m sure I’m missing something but do you see how many muscles fire when you stand on one leg? Most of those terms describe groups of muscles. This is why it burns!

Embrace the shaking and burning because you’re working the largest muscle groups in your body to the point of fatigue which means you’re burning fat, building strength and endurance. If you’ve stepped away from the barre then you’re also training your proprioceptors in your joints which aid with balance. In addition to strengthening your muscles and improving your balance, you’re weight bearing which means you’re preventing bone loss…something most women need to be conscious of.

If you’re struggling to finish the set, make sure you have a slight bend in the standing knee and try shifting your weight to the instep of your foot. Many of you try to compensate by turning the opposite hip out/up. This is not recommended as it puts your lumbar spine in a compromising position. You should try your best to keep your pelvis parallel to the floor, shoulders relaxed and your abdominals pulled in towards your spine.

Now that you read this, when you feel your standing leg shaking and burning…stay strong mentally and know that you’re burning fat, building strength, endurance, balance and bone density!

If you haven’t been to our studio yet, we encourage you to take a leap of faith and try something new. The instructors here at Buffalo Barre are patient, kind and willing to assist you with your fitness goals for Barre, Pilates and Power Yoga!

Wishing you peace, health and happiness in 2014!
