Buffalo Barre Kids!

Buffalo BarreAccording to Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative, a staggering 1 in 3 children in the US are obese or overweight. Although childhood obesity is decreasing in numbers in some cities, it continues to be a major crisis in our country. What is called “Adult Onset Diabetes” is now being diagnosed in children. Obesity is being diagnosed in children as young as age 2! Childhood obesity can lead to other problems later in life like heart disease, osteoarthritis, stroke, several types of cancer, sleep apnea and the list goes on. In addition to physical health problems, kids may suffer from a lack of self-esteem and other psychological issues.

Buffalo Barre Kids is a fun, healthy way for kids to spend an hour on a late Sunday morning whether they have weight issues or not. It takes them away from the video games, TV, iPads etc. and still leaves the early morning and rest of the day for family time.

Buffalo Barre

The things they will learn at Buffalo Barre Kids will be carried throughout their lives…mostly that exercise can really be a lot of fun!

Buffalo Barre

In class, we focus on the fun. Fun kids music, fun games, fun traditional excercises like jumping jacks, skipping, galloping and a combination of basic stretching, Barre, Pilates and Yoga exercises.

The Standing Leg

At Buffalo Barre, we use the term “the standing leg.” The standing leg is usually burning, shaking and doing its best to support the moving leg. The question I get all the time is…”why is my standing leg killing me if I’m working the other leg?”

It’s such a great question! You’re working so hard to do all the movements correctly with the leg that’s moving that you get frustrated when the standing leg wants to give out and give up!

When you’re weight bearing through one leg, you’re firing every muscle in that leg including your intrinsic foot muscles, your gastrocnemius, soleus, tibialis anterior, peroneals, hip adductors, abductors, hip flexors, quadriceps, hamstrings, your core which includes your glutes…I’m sure I’m missing something but do you see how many muscles fire when you stand on one leg? Most of those terms describe groups of muscles. This is why it burns!

Embrace the shaking and burning because you’re working the largest muscle groups in your body to the point of fatigue which means you’re burning fat, building strength and endurance. If you’ve stepped away from the barre then you’re also training your proprioceptors in your joints which aid with balance. In addition to strengthening your muscles and improving your balance, you’re weight bearing which means you’re preventing bone loss…something most women need to be conscious of.

If you’re struggling to finish the set, make sure you have a slight bend in the standing knee and try shifting your weight to the instep of your foot. Many of you try to compensate by turning the opposite hip out/up. This is not recommended as it puts your lumbar spine in a compromising position. You should try your best to keep your pelvis parallel to the floor, shoulders relaxed and your abdominals pulled in towards your spine.

Now that you read this, when you feel your standing leg shaking and burning…stay strong mentally and know that you’re burning fat, building strength, endurance, balance and bone density!

If you haven’t been to our studio yet, we encourage you to take a leap of faith and try something new. The instructors here at Buffalo Barre are patient, kind and willing to assist you with your fitness goals for Barre, Pilates and Power Yoga!

Wishing you peace, health and happiness in 2014!

Buffalo Barre Gives Back to Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo

“The best thing about giving is that the reaction is always greater than the action.”

Buffalo Barre is dedicated to helping its community and surrounding WNY area through various fundraising and community service activities, classes and donations. This year for the holidays, we chose to donate to Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. In return for a small donation, we offered many free classes over the course of 3 days. We are very thankful for all of the generous donations received and we’re sure the children and parents will be too! We hope to inspire others to give back to their community by creating a ripple effect of generosity for those in need.

We hope this brings many smiles :)

We hope this brings many smiles 🙂

Thank you to all that participated and donated! We look forward to many more Buffalo Barre Gives Back events!

Buffalo Barre…Before and After

011It’s been a little over a week since Buffalo Barre opened its doors and I wanted to share with all of you the transformation that took place in order for this to happen!

After many months of looking for the perfect space and location for Buffalo Barre, the search was over when the lease for the space in the Transit Valley Plaza, 5843 Transit Rd., East Amherst, NY was signed. The keys were handed over to me on November 1, 2013 and instantly my mind started racing with excitement! It took me a few days to even be able to think straight before a plan was set in motion. My goal would be to open by December 2, 2013. It was aggressive but not impossible. There were many days when I had my doubts that this could happen in such a short amount of time, but when I started doubting, I would remind myself of my mission for Buffalo Barre…which is basically to help people improve their lives and inspire others to do the same. When I reminded myself of this, I knew that it would be finished when it was supposed to be finished and I had to let go of things I couldn’t control and focus on what I could.

Prior to Buffalo Barre, the space was leased by an insurance company so it needed structural changes. Walls had to be torn down, carpets had to be ripped up, wallpaper had to come down, electrical and lighting had to be reconfigured..etc. and it needed some finishing touches to make it feel warm and welcoming.

After a month of pure craziness, Buffalo Barre opened its doors on Monday, December 2, 2013. I can’t say that the process was easy, but it was definitely worth it all in the end…like most things in life!

Below, I posted the before and after photos. Enjoy viewing the transformation! For those of you who helped out, you know that every little thing takes hours…it’s not like what you see on on all of the home makeover shows. If it’s done correctly, it takes a lot of time, patience, and faith. Special thanks to my husband and Dad for their handymanliness!

We hope to see you at Buffalo Barre soon so you can check out our brand new studio in person!
